- All PSK and QAM modulation schemes are inherently synchronous,
- consequently all modem transmission schemes (except a few ancient ones
- like V.21 and V.23) are synchronous. Since asynchronous serial ports are
- very common, the modems convert async (DTE) <-> sync (DCE). For
- connections using error control this conversion is part of V.42,
- otherwise for normal (buffered) or direct (unbuffered) mode it is done
- according to V.14.

-
- It depends on the modem. Many modems can interface to the DTE in both
- modes, with different degrees of sophistication. See your modem manual
- for details. Many newer "consumer" modems don't support sync mode
- anymore. There are probably some "industry" modems out there, especially
- leased line ones, which only support sync mode.

-
- It doesn't affect the bit rate. (What do you mean by "effective bit
- rate"? There is no such thing.) It is a matter of modem<->terminal
- interfacing.

-
- Generally, in sync mode, the modem performs as a dumb data pump, without
- error control and compression. Applications in need of these features
- generally implement them themselves. (Yes, there are some modems out
- there with SDLC spoofing and compression in sync mode.)
